Enscape not working in SketchUp after an update: solutions

Quick answer

Enscape usually stops working in SketchUp because the Enscape plug-in does not yet support the new SketchUp version, the extension is disabled, or the graphics driver is outdated. Check the version pairing, re-enable the extension, update your GPU driver and, if necessary, perform a clean reinstall.

Why Enscape stops working after an update

Enscape usually stops working in SketchUp for one of three reasons: the Enscape plug-in does not yet support the updated SketchUp version, the extension is disabled, or the graphics driver is outdated or unstable. A SketchUp or Enscape update often resets the very setting that causes the problem, making the toolbar disappear without warning.

Enscape is not a standalone renderer but a plug-in that hooks itself into your SketchUp version during installation. This connection relies on a small Ruby file inside the SketchUp Plugins folder that loads the actual Enscape application on startup. If the SketchUp version changes or that file becomes corrupted, Enscape loses its link and fails to launch.

Always work top-down through this sequence: first the version combination, then the extension, then isolate whether the problem lies with SketchUp or Enscape, then the driver, and only as a last resort a full reinstall. That way you find the cause without needlessly reinstalling everything.

Check the version combination

Start by asking: which SketchUp version and which Enscape version are you running? Enscape 4.x provides plug-ins for recent SketchUp year versions, typically SketchUp 2022 and newer. If you update SketchUp to a brand-new year version (for example, SketchUp 2025) before Enscape officially supports it, the toolbar won’t appear and the plug-in won’t load.

In SketchUp, open the Help menu and then About SketchUp to see the exact version number. You can find your Enscape version in the Enscape settings window under About, or in your list of installed programmes. Note both numbers down before you proceed, because that combination determines whether Enscape can load at all.

Next, check the Chaos system requirements page to see which Enscape version goes with your SketchUp version. If the pairing is wrong, update Enscape to the version that supports your SketchUp, or install the SketchUp version that your Enscape was built for.

Watch out for automatic updates. SketchUp may suggest a new year version on launch, and Windows or macOS quietly updates the rest of your system. If you accept blindly, you will run straight into this problem. When you’re in the middle of a project, postpone a major update until you’ve confirmed that Enscape already supports the new version.

  • SketchUp updated, Enscape not: update Enscape to the latest version.
  • Enscape updated, old graphics card: read the section on the graphics driver.
  • Both updated but still no toolbar: move on to re-enable the extension.
  • You’re running a beta or preview of SketchUp: these are often not yet supported; use the stable year release.

Re-enable the extension

An update can disable the Enscape extension or hide the toolbar. In SketchUp, open Extensions and then Extension Manager. Check whether Enscape appears in the list and the toggle is switched on. If it’s off, turn it on and restart SketchUp.

If the extension is enabled but you still don’t see the toolbar, go to View, then Toolbars, and uncheck then re-check Enscape. This reset often makes the toolbar reappear. On macOS, this is View, then Toolbar. If the toolbar has ended up behind another panel, drag it out and back into place.

If Enscape is completely missing from Extension Manager, the plug-in has not been installed into the correct SketchUp folder. On Windows, plug-ins for each SketchUp version live here:

%AppData%\SketchUp\SketchUp 2024\SketchUp\Plugins

Replace 2024 with your year version. Paste this path into File Explorer’s address bar. If you see no Enscape files in that folder, the installation targeted the wrong version and a reinstall will help. If the files are there but the extension doesn’t load, the Ruby Console (Extensions menu > Developer > Ruby Console) will often show an error line that reveals the cause.

Isolate the cause

Before you reinstall everything, first determine whether the problem lies with SketchUp, with Enscape, or with another extension. This stops you spending hours on the wrong fix.

  1. Launch SketchUp and check whether the programme itself works normally without error messages.
  2. In Extension Manager, temporarily disable your other extensions and leave only Enscape enabled.
  3. Restart SketchUp and test whether the Enscape toolbar now appears.
  4. If Enscape then works, re-enable your other extensions one by one until you find the culprit.

A conflicting extension or an old plug-in that cannot cope with the new SketchUp version sometimes blocks Enscape from loading. Remove or update the offender. If Enscape still fails to launch on its own, the problem is with Enscape itself or with the graphics card, so move on to the next steps.

Finally, test with a blank, new model. If Enscape works there but not in your own project, the issue is in that file, perhaps a corrupted material or an overly heavy scene. Save the model again with Save As and check whether that resolves the problem.

Update the graphics driver

Enscape leans heavily on the graphics card. The software requires a dedicated GPU with at least 4 GB of video memory; 8 GB or more is recommended. Intel integrated graphics are not supported for the full feature set. If your laptop runs on the power-saving internal chip instead of the discrete card, Enscape may not start or may render black.

Update the driver through your card manufacturer, NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel, not just via Windows Update. Download the driver directly from the manufacturer and, during installation, choose a clean install so that old remnants are removed. Restart your computer afterwards.

Then make sure SketchUp uses the high-performance card. On Windows, go to Settings > System > Display > Graphics, and set SketchUp to High performance. In the NVIDIA Control Panel you can set the same per application. In Windows Task Manager, on the Performance tab, check how much VRAM your card has so you know for certain that you meet the minimum 4 GB.

Note the ray-tracing features: DLSS and hardware-accelerated ray tracing are no longer supported on the NVIDIA GTX 1660 series from Enscape 4.0 onwards. If rendering crashes on such a card, disable the demanding effects in the Enscape settings or use an RTX-series card for the full feature set.

If Enscape freezes after rendering or shows an error about the graphics card, it helps to close the live render window and open it again. If it keeps going wrong with heavy scenes, temporarily lower the render quality and resolution so the card needs less memory. A model with lots of duplicated geometry puts extra stress on the GPU, so a lighter model often runs more stably than a heavier card with a messy model.

Perform a clean reinstall

If the previous steps don’t work, carry out a clean reinstall in the right order. The order matters because Enscape attaches itself to the SketchUp versions it finds during installation.

  1. Uninstall Enscape via Settings > Apps on Windows or via the Applications folder on macOS.
  2. If the problem persists, uninstall SketchUp as well.
  3. Restart the computer so that locked files are released.
  4. Install SketchUp first and let it fully launch once.
  5. Install Enscape last and restart SketchUp again.

Always download Enscape from the official Chaos download page and use the installer that matches your licence. That way you know the plug-in and the licence align. Run the installer with administrator rights so it can place files in the system folders.

If you often use repeated elements in your scenes, it’s useful to know when to use components or groups in SketchUp, because a lighter model renders more stably and puts less strain on the graphics card.

Check folder and permissions

If Enscape still hangs after a reinstall, check the permissions. On macOS, Enscape needs Full Disk Access. Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Full Disk Access, and make sure Enscape and SketchUp are ticked there. If the entry is missing, add the programmes manually with the plus button.

On Windows, an antivirus or endpoint tool can quarantine the Enscape files, preventing the plug-in from loading. Add the SketchUp Plugins folder and the Enscape programme folder to your security software’s exceptions. If in doubt, launch SketchUp once as an administrator to see if a permission issue is the cause.

Finally, check whether your licence is active. An expired or not-signed-in licence sometimes lets Enscape install but prevents it from rendering. Sign in again with the account that holds the licence and confirm that the subscription is still running.

Prevent it from happening again

Most failures arise because SketchUp and Enscape are updated independently. You can avoid most trouble by watching the update order and not jumping on every new version blindly.

  • Before updating SketchUp, check whether your Enscape version already supports that new year version.
  • Update Enscape when a new SketchUp version is officially supported, not before.
  • Keep your graphics driver current, but skip a brand-new driver if you’re in the middle of a project.
  • Keep the installer of a working Enscape version so you can fall back quickly.

If you work in a team, agree on a fixed, tested combination of SketchUp and Enscape and make sure everyone uses it. That way you avoid one person being able to render while another cannot because versions have drifted. Then update together after a brief test on a single machine.

Frequently asked questions

The toolbar usually disappears because SketchUp has disabled the extension after the update or the toolbar display has been reset. Go to View > Toolbars and re-check Enscape. If the extension is off in Extension Manager, switch it back on first.

Enscape 4.x supplies plug-ins for recent SketchUp year versions, normally SketchUp 2022 and newer. If you update SketchUp to a brand-new year release before Enscape officially supports it, the plug-in won’t load and the toolbar won’t appear. Always check the current combination on the Chaos system requirements page.

Enscape requires a dedicated GPU with at least 4 GB of video memory; 8 GB is recommended. Intel integrated graphics are not supported. Update the driver through the manufacturer and check in Windows that Enscape is using the correct card, not the power-saving internal chip.

Install SketchUp first and only then Enscape, because Enscape attaches itself to the SketchUp versions it finds during installation. For a clean reinstall, uninstall both programmes, restart, install SketchUp first, let it launch once, and install Enscape last.

A black view or a crash during rendering almost always points to the GPU: insufficient video memory, an outdated driver, or an old card without ray tracing. The GTX 1660 series no longer supports hardware ray tracing from Enscape 4.0 onwards. Update the driver or turn off demanding effects.
